On Moonlight Bay

August 2024 · 4 minute read

On Moonlight Bay is a nostalgic comedy-romance of the 1915-17 period that takes a slice from Booth Tarkington's Alice Adams and another from his Penrod stories to frame the likeable characters against a small-town family setting. In keeping with the period, only one new song is used, and that fits the costumed background.

In keeping with the period, only one new song is used, and that fits the costumed background.

Doris Day is seen as the 18-year-old tomboyish daughter of Leon Ames and Rosemary DeCamp and the sister of puckish kid brother, Billy Gray. Day transitions from tomboy to dating miss when she meets Gordon MacRae after papa has moved his family to a new neighborhood, and the plot carries the principals through typical involvements, romantic and family, before pop finally consents to a marriage.

All of the characters are good for some hefty laughs, and Del Ruth’s direction and the writing supply plenty of touches that keep punching the risibilities and jogging nostalgic memory. Highly hilarious moments include Day’s first dance date with MacRae, and the two powder puffs aiding nature, until a violent embrace nearly asphyxiates MacRae in a cloud of talc.
